Interstellar Common is a constructed language (conlang) that I am developing for a space opera worldbuilding project that I hope to eventually write stories in. Common is a purely written language because most alien species can’t produce the same sounds as each other. This presents unique challenges compared with any (written) Earth language because even Chinese characters have phonetic components to them.
(Most Chinese characters are compounds with two parts to them: a “related to” component and a “sounds like” component, sort of like how if I say “a mammal that starts with E,” you’ll probably think of an elephant.)
Interstellar Common can’t do that, and that, as you might imagine, makes it very hard to building a dictionary. In fact, I think I’ve got the grammar pretty much down, but the dictionary is a complete mess.
For my linguistically inclined readers, including those of you from LCC11, here are the reference grammar and dictionary for the current version of Interstellar Common, v5.1. (Be advised that the dictionary is to some extent out of date to the grammar and needs a complete overhaul of verbs in particular.)
And here is a writing sample in Interstellar Common, created for the LCC11 Translation Relay:
